Fourth Graders study about NC History in Social Studies
In the fall of this school year, fourth graders read the book Blue by Joyce Hostetter. As a way of celebrating part of their local Watauga County history, the class decided to make a quilt based on the book. Students began making their quilt squares in the fall and by April the project was complete.
The project began with students drawing a teardrop shaped bottle which would later become their quilt squares. Students then sewed their cut-out designs onto various quilting material and then attached their squares together to form a quilt.
The project would not have been a success were it not for the help & talent of Carolyn Walters (media specialist) and Jane Arrington (a substitute & volunteer extraordinaire). Mrs. Arrington offered her quilting expertise and talent by helping sew things together and creating the batting. The students learned a great deal about sewing and enjoyed making the quilt. As you can see from the picture, the finished quilt is truly beautiful! We are very proud of the students and their hard work and to those who helped make it a reality.
