Share the Love Reading

Cove Creek
"Share the Love (of Reading)" Celebration

Dear Parents and Students,
During the week of February 8-12, Cove Creek Students will have the opportunity to share their love of reading by participating in a paperback book exchange through the media center.  Each grade level area will have a day when they will bring in students'  "gently used/age appropriate" paperback books that they want to donate.

The days are assigned as follows:
Tuesday Feb. 9 - Grades Pre-K through 2
Wednesday Feb. 10 - Middle School
Thursday Feb. 11 - Grades 3-5

Please send any books you have at home that you wish to donate on the day BEFORE your child's grade is to come.  Homeroom teachers will bring these books to the media center on the morning of the day their grade level is to come.
Each class will be scheduled for a time, so that each student can pick out a book that he/she would like to read.

What a great way to celebrate the Love of Reading, by sharing and swapping books!

Shooting Stars 2016
Students - it is that time of year again. Time for Shooting Stars!

Be thinking about a performing arts act or a piece of visual artwork you want to share.  Maybe Christmas break is the perfect time to talk it over with your parents and friends, complete the necessary forms and start preparing your submission(s).

Remember visuals arts have to be signed off on by an art teacher.  However, it does not have to be an in-class art assignment.

Guidelines, forms, and dates are all available on the WEF website:

wataugaeducationfoundation.com

Visual Arts submissions due 2/26/2016
Performing arts submissions due 3/4/2016
Performing Arts Auditions Saturday March 12, 2016   (times will be assigned later)

  • Dates will not move if we get hit by weather; due dates have been set for as late as possible.
  • Shooting Stars Rehearsals are mandatory. If someone is unable to attend these rehearsals then they should not audition for the show and leave the spot open for someone who can. A performer must be at the rehearsals to be in the show.
Watauga Education Foundation supports our students through events like Shooting Stars.  They love raising money to put right back into the schools and could not succeed without community support!

Mark your calendars and plan to attend Shooting Stars 2016!

Character Trait of the Month

Shoe Donations

Dear Cove Creek Community,

We are collecting gently used shoes (any size) to raise money for our horticulture class. Every pair of shoes you bring in will be donated to a marketplace around the world. Please donate your gently used shoes today! Shoes will be collected all school year.

Just think about it, your shoes could be another person’s first pair.

Thank you, The Horticulture Class

Summer Reading Winners Acknowledged
Mrs. D. Combs' 5th grade class were surprised today when they got a knock on their door from Yosef and some of the ASU Women's basketball players.  Not long ago, these students were recognized as the county-wide winners for being the class of students who read the most books over summer break.  These outstanding students had the highest percentage of students participating in the summer reading program, at 63.16%.  The players spent their time answering students' questions but also reminding them of the importance of being life-long readers. Thank you to these students for being so being so motivated about reading and setting a great example for other students to follow.  It's great to be a Cove Creek Raider and a Mountaineer!

Kinders Donate to Cancer Center
On Friday, December 11, Mrs. Hensley and Mrs. Alisa's kindergarten class, winners of the Fall Festival Pumpkin Book Character contest, were able to proudly present the Seby B. Jones Cancer Center with a check for $231.12.  What a great example of love and generosity demonstrated by some of our youngest Cove Creek Raiders. Thank you to everyone who voted in the contest.  Your donations will help touch the lives of people in our community battling cancer.  #RaiderProud

Students met with staff members Marjorie Hrozencik (above & below)
and Angie Shoemake (below) during their visit.

PBIS at Cove Creek
In late October Cove Creek kicked off our school-wide PBIS (Positive Behaviors, Interventions and Supports) program with an assembly.  Several members of the ASU Cheerleading Squad, members of the Women's Basketball Team and Yosef himself came out to show their support in getting our students and staff excited about PBIS logo:

C - Be a Responsible Citizen
C - Make Good Choices
S - Achieve Success

We have always had an awesome school and have recognized students for their positive behavior, good choices and successes.  But now we have raised the bar and put an added emphasis on those same expectations as they pertain to the classroom, the cafeteria, the bathrooms, our hallways, the playground and the bus.

In addition to classroom rewards, teachers in all areas can now catch individual students following the expectations and give them a Red Raider.  Classrooms of students can be given White Raiders for demonstrating these achievements. Individual classrooms are having celebrations when they meet their White Raider goal.  Also, posters are being placed in the six areas to remind everyone of the expectations.  We are very proud of the great things that are happening as a result of PBIS at Cove Creek.  Keep up the good work students!

Technology Showcase at BOE
Several of our students - Grace Greene, Donovan and Duncan Sherman, had the opportunity to share a little about what they are learning and how they are using technology in school in what is being called the "Technology Showcase" during the November BOE meeting held at the Margaret Gragg Education Center.  Click here to read the article featured in the Watauga Democrat.  Way to go Robo Raiders!
Club members (pictured below) recently participated in the First Lego League competition held at WHS.
Of 22 teams, they finished 4th in the Robot Game and 6th in programming (Robot Design). Thank you to Mrs. Kim McAulay and all the wonderful parents and volunteers who give of their time to help mentor and work along side these creative minds, engineers and future problem solvers of the world.

Skyline Phone Books
Our Skyline directory collection drive continues.  Support recycling and help our school earn 25 cents for each directory collected.  Phone books may be dropped off at the school office.  We collect them year-round.  Don't delay and bring in those phonebooks!
